Category Classification:
Along with the Star Grading System, the VisitScotland's Quality Assurance further divides accommodation under 15 different categorises:
B&B:Accommodation offering bed and breakfast, usually in a private house, accommodating no more than 6 guests, and may or may not serve an evening meal.
Camping Park:
A park for camping only.
Campus Accommodation:
College or University Accommodation is made available with meals during certain times of the year; usually Summer, Easter and Christmas.
Guest House:Usually a commercial business with a minimum of 4 letting bedrooms, of which some will have en-suite or private facilities. Breakfast will be available and evening meals may be provided.
Holiday Park:A park which offers holiday homes and most likely touring and camping pitches.
Hostels:Are run by a private operator or non profit making organization. Beds and sometimes meals and other services are provided.
Hotel:Normally will have a minimum of 20 letting bedrooms, with at least half having en-suite or private bathroom facilities. A hotel will normally have a drinks licence, and will serve breakfast, dinner and normally will serve lunch as well.
Inn:Bed and Breakfast accommodation within a traditional inn or pub. A restaurant and bar will be open to non-residents and will provide restaurant or bar food
at lunchtime and in the evening.
International Resort Hotel:
A hotel achieving a 5 star quality award, which owns and offers a range of leisure and sporting facilities including an 18 hole golf course, swimming and leisure centre and country pursuits.
Lodge:Purpose built overnight accommodation, often close to a main road or city centre. Reception hours may be restricted. There may be associated restaurant facilities. Car parking for each room normally provided.
Restaurant with Rooms: The restaurant is the most significant part of the business which is open to non-residents. Accommodation is available and breakfast is usually provided.
Self-Catering: A house, apartment, chalet or similar accommodation let usually on a weekly basis with facilities to allow you to cater yourself.
Serviced Apartments: Are self catering apartments with cleaning provided. Meals and drinks are available in a restaurant or bar on site.
Small Hotel: Will normally have from a minimum of 6 letting bedrooms to a maximum of 20. At least half of the letting rooms will have en-suite or private bathroom facilities. Will also have a drinks licence, and will serve breakfast, dinner and may serve lunch. It will usually be run by the owners.
Touring Park: Offers touring pitches and may offer camping pitches.
